Poem 71

It’s bittersweet but I’ll admit it,
I told you nearly all of what I had to say.
And now my final truth reveals itself to me,
as clear as day.

despite your ever blinding radiance and light…
despite this lonesome hermit’s immolated sight…
despite the fact that it’s a truth I loathe and dread…
it is my sweet and bitter truth,
my final truth that won’t be left unsaid.

Truth is,
Upon our day the sun was set,
So many moons before we even met…
It is a truth I fought so hard
and dug so deep into myself to fight,
but now, alas, descends upon us night…

Remember this,
It was my highest joy and joyfullest pain,
For just a brief and wondrous time…
To be a mere reflection of your light.
To be your bright and humble satellite.
To bleed for you upon a page.
To play a jokester,
and a trickster,
and a hopeless fool for you upon a stage.

You asked for none of it,
and yet I gave it to you anyway.
Expecting nothing in return,
that is the only way I know to give it.
Given the option to relive it,
believe me when I say…
I would not choose to live it through
in any other way.

But every fresh and throbbing wound
(that doesn’t spell our doom)
becomes a dull and aching scar…
This one was burned upon my body
by a faraway yet brilliant star.
Left as a cherished memory
by a beloved stranger
and an ever distant friend.
Truth is..
I’ll bear the mark you left upon my heart
until my sweet and bitter end.
