Poem 70

Finally some peace and quiet,
no more silent whispers in the night.
Finally he may have learned,
how to behave himself quite right.
Does that mean that the Devil’s bidding
is finished and done?
Does that mean that the ceaseless heartache and longing
is finally gone?
Alas, he walks a long and winding path
and works in strange and crooked ways…

His final labor is performed
by idle hands and disillusioned eyes.
By grains of sand within an hourglass
which trickle hours into days
and turn our days to night.
By silent gravity
which transfigures heavenly radiance
into gentle moonlight…

By those primordial forces
which arbitrate over possibilities
and rule over eventualities,
he weaves the threads of meaning in his words
into the fabric of reality.
