Poem 464

How is it..
that you wish
to be The Sun
itself?
But you don’t wish
to know
the place where all
his highest wealth
still lies..
the darkness
of a lonesome,
moonless
night?

I tried to teach you,
hand on heart,
I did, upon a time..
and may God
strike me down
if what I’m saying
is a lie.
It seems the only way
to reach you
is to make you feel
the loneliness
I felt..
for, brightest stars
are forged
from lonesome strife
that lingers
in the space of those
who left.

The strife
of losing those
who you loved most,
upon a sunny day.
Indeed, I am afraid,
my little sparrow..
that’s the only way.
It is what brought me
to my knees
and made me pray.

I do not think
we’ll meet again,
because The Sun
was set on us
a-many
yesterdays ago.
I only hope
you shine as bright
in eyes of others..
as upon a time
I did in yours.
