Poem 461

It’s true,
just after
I had promised
nightly peckings..
I took an axe
to this ol’ fruiting tree..
why do you reckon?

Because I am
a liar
and an oath
breaker.
Believe me
when I say,
my little sparrow..
that this call
was made
in your best favor.

What does a doctor
do with an appendix
that’s inflamed?
He cuts it out.
Instead of feeding you
my bitter fruits
to make you lovesick..
this stark mercy
should’ve been my
first and only
course of treatment..
but I wallowed
in my doubt.

Alas, now that I’m
certain..
it is time, at last,
to burn the ships.
I loved you once
upon a time..
but now
I am beholden
to a sweeter pair
of rosy lips.
