Poem 428

What if Jesus
never resurrected?
And on the third day
when they rolled away
The Heaviest of Stones..
They didn’t find
His tomb to be quite empty,
but instead..
they found His rotting Flesh..
surrounded by a stench
of Death?
A stench to chill
even the most devout
of His disciples
to the bone..

The least among them,
doubtlessly,
in utter disappointment
would just
stumble their way home.
As they would curse at Him
beneath their breath..
“So much for the so-called
Shepherd of Men.
He preached a-many nothings
wrapped up in a flowery dress..
but when his hour came
to back it up..
he couldn’t even
save himself.”

The truer of His students
would not be so easy
to mislead.
In mortal doubt, indeed,
they would still agonize..
“What of the many people
that through faith alone
He healed?
What of the miracles
we witnessed Him perform
before our very eyes?
And yet, perhaps he was
naught more than but
another soothsayer..
preaching good wisdoms
with The Son of God
as his rhetorical disguise..”

Only the truest of disciples
would be shrewd enough
and hold sufficient faith
to recognize..
The Word He preached
did incarnate in Flesh..
exactly as He prophesied.
The Temple was rebuilt,
but not through Him..
Rather, instead,
through them.
Within their heart
of hearts,
and truly, truly,
nowhere else..
Laid the foundation
for His holiest and highest
form of wealth.
