Poem 406

Even grown-ups
love games.
However,
just because
you are a player
does not mean
you play..

Pretend.
A game without
a definite
winning condition..
and so,
a game that
may potentially
keep going..
without end.
A game where rules
are undefined..
except the ones
we ultimately
choose to write.

It may seem childish,
but alas..
don’t mock me for it,
little baby.
And if you wish to play
with me
then play it sweetly
and be nice..
Or else, be warned..
indeed,
The Devil bites.

In all good seriousness,
childishness is that
which gives pretending
innocence.
A playful virtuosity
that is, among adults,
so difficult to find.
It is the long-lost art
of pure self-giving
virtue..
a priceless gift
bestowed upon us,
boring grown-ups..
by The Child.
