Poem 287

it’s bittersweet,
but I’ll admit it..
I got my ticket,
finally,
to board the train..
bound
for a destination
far far far away.
The One
for which
so many times
I bargained
with The Devil..
and to God
I prayed.

And what is it
that I feel now?
Firm hope..
Fates know
exactly where
they’re leading
me about.
I have not
but an inkling
of doubt
within my heart.

And what
do I do now
to celebrate
this triumph?
Literally
bawl my eyes out.
Because
for every future
that we choose
to take..
we pay the price
of infinite
alternative
life histories..
which we are forced
by our decision
to forsake.

I do not cry
because I am upset..
I cry because of
all the people
that I’ve loved..
and won’t be able
ever to forget.
The Ones
upon which
I’ll be forced
to loosen my grip.
My tribe,
my muses,
fellow reapers..
and especially
my beloved
and my kin.

Not all is lost,
I won’t be dead!
And all who know me
also know full well..
the path
that I’m pursuing..
is The One
that just for me,
by will of fates,
was always meant.

And yet,
in spite of that
I cannot help
but shed
a-many tear..
for those
from whom
I must depart..
The Ones
I hold most dear
within my heart.
