Poem 237

Nobody had to teach us
how to cry.
All of us do it
when we are first born.
Some of us do it
even on our deathbed..
Have you
ever wondered..
why?

We cry as babies
for our parents..
when some need
or whim of ours
goes unmet.

We cry as kids
when others
cause us hurt..
either by
injury, exclusion,
or some other
offense.

We cry as teenagers
when we are laden
with the weight
of social shame, rejection,
or embarrassment..
to name a few.
the loveliest of feelings
that we just acquired
the capacity
to comprehend..
and now are forced
to really feel through.

We cry as young adults
when we feel lost
in our purpose..
or when there is a
stark discrepancy
between the life we live
right now
and the life for which
we feel
that we are meant.

The older that we get
the more the list
of reasons
for our crying grows..
We cry for sorrow..
We cry for grief..
We cry for help..
We cry for
sweet relief..

However,
once upon
a peaceful height..
In deafening silence
of a lonesome hour
in the night..
have you ever cried
for seemingly
no reason at all?
No misfortune,
no unsettling emotion
to disturb you..
but the tears just
flow and flow.
