Poem 140

What does it feel like.. to see red?
What is it like.. to love someone?
Someone that likes you..
But that does not love you yet?
And are we merely arguing semantics?
And am I being..
unnecessarily pedantic?
Is there a disagreement over definitions
here at play?
Perhaps there is..
But maybe look at it my way.

To love someone..
that is to take a leap of faith.
Some people hesitate to take it
all too early..
Some people hesitate..
until it’s far too late.
There is a trust to it..
And a vulnerability.
Unless it is reciprocally shared..
It is a subject to its own fragility.

A stable footing.. requires two feet.
Halfway.. that is the only place
where lovers’ hearts may truly meet.
To stand upright and stable..
requires two legs.
One cannot always
hold this weight alone..
One cannot always be
the one who begs.

Alas, in weighing hearts against a feather..
Somebody has to be the firmer one
at first..
The one who knows it better..
is often he who bears the burden
at its worst.
The one who knows that the reward
outweighs the pain.
The one who’s willing to keep bearing it..
though all of it may ultimately be in vain.
The one who does not lightly choose to leave..
The one who, in his heart of hearts, believes.
The one who does not easily give up the fight.
Instead, he keeps his patient, solitary vigil..
Day and night.
