The ones we love
are best positioned
to bring us pain..
Especially when they are hesitant,
for one good reason or another,
to state that also.. they are fond of us..
in their own way.
that in their own way also..
they feel comfortable in stating
that they love us back.
Perhaps it’s not a given.
Perhaps it’s not a fact.

The ones to whom
we lay our heart out
in the open..
The ones to whom we make
our deepest feelings known.
The ones to whom most freely
our most innocent
and tender love is shown.
The ones whose heart
is on the fence..
though there is nothing
that they stand to lose.
The ones that surely
mean no harm to us..
that do not hold
the slightest purpose
to abuse..
but still remains opaque
and inconceivable to us
their deepest truth.

And do they keep it under question..
and do they keep it as a riddle..
Just because they question all too hard
whether the words they’re told
are true and real?
Or is it just because.. that there is nothing..
frankly, nothing in their heart,
that they can feel?
